Move Like the Person You're Becoming

Most people move according to the person they are today.

I think that's backward.

We wait until we feel strong to move strongly. Wait until we feel confident to carry ourselves confidently. Wait until we're "in shape" to start treating our bodies like capable bodies.

Then we wonder why becoming someone different takes so damn long.

Your body isn't just along for the ride while your mind creates your identity.

Your body is helping create it.

Identity Has a Physical Expression

Picture someone walking into a room scared shitless.

You can probably see them without seeing them.

Shoulders pulled in. Eyes down. Smaller movements. Protective posture.

Now picture someone who feels completely comfortable being there.

Different body.

That's not to say posture magically fixes insecurity or that everyone expresses emotion the same way. Human beings are considerably more complicated than an Instagram infographic.

But mind and body are constantly communicating.

We tend to think that communication only travels one direction:

I feel confident, therefore I move confidently.

What happens when we reverse it?

I intentionally move with greater confidence, and my brain receives different information about who I am.

Now things get interesting.

Your Body Rehearses Identity

You already understand rehearsal.

Do something enough times and it becomes easier to access.

Movement works the same way.

Every time you stand up instead of staying planted, take the stairs, get onto the floor, carry something heavy, stretch, dance, walk farther, balance, reach, squat, climb, or play, you're giving your brain evidence.

This is something I do.

That's far more powerful than waiting around for motivation.

Because eventually "I'm trying to become more active" can become:

I'm someone who moves.

Small distinction.

Massive consequence.

Stop Training for the Mirror

Somewhere along the way, movement got hijacked by appearance.

Burn this.

Tone that.

Shrink here.

Build there.

Measure everything.

No wonder people hate exercise.

What if movement became less about correcting your body and more about expanding what your body can do?

Can you get off the floor easily?

Can you carry your groceries?

Can you climb something?

Can you play with your kids?

Can you travel without your body becoming the limitation?

Can you still do those things twenty years from now?

That's a much more interesting reason to move.

You're not training for Tuesday's mirror.

You're training for your future life.

Meet Your Future Body Halfway

Imagine yourself ten years from now.

Not aesthetically.

Functionally.

How does that person move?

Are they strong? Mobile? Capable? Adventurous? Still getting on the floor? Still traveling? Still dancing? Still saying yes when life gets physical?

Good.

Now stop waiting ten years to become them.

Give that person five minutes today.

Walk farther.

Take the stairs.

Get onto the floor and get back up.

Move your spine.

Carry something.

Dance in the damn kitchen.

Your future self isn't created by one heroic workout.

It's built through thousands of ordinary moments when your body learns:

This is who we are now.

Move Before You Believe It

This is where movement becomes bigger than fitness.

Sometimes the mind needs evidence before it changes its story.

Give it some.

Don't wait until you feel powerful.

Move with intention.

Don't wait until you identify as an active person.

Act like one today.

Don't wait until your future body arrives before you start respecting it.

Start building the relationship now.

Because becoming isn't something that only happens inside your head.

Sometimes you have to move first.

Your identity will catch up.
